Personalized Ads?

By Erik Hinch

A personalized ad towards me was an ad I would see constantly whilst scrolling through YouTube. Not surprisingly, an ad tailored to Rise Against was what hit me. I was surprised because I know the band itself isn’t doing this advertisement, and they haven’t had any new material or anything for over a year…so why? It was actually an ad showing a special they had where you could get their last three albums on iTunes for a very cheap price, and it was flashing the album covers as well as the hit singles off of each record in the ad.  It didn’t necessarily make me want to go out and purchase these albums on there, for I’ve already got physical copies of every album they’ve made (don’t look at me like that, I’m not obsessed or anything…).  However, it did get me interested in looking up their music a bit more after I saw the ad (the first few times, after that it got rather annoying, just like every other advertisement ever made…EVER).

I was looking through the ads in the newspaper and found an ad for Fleece at Hancock Fabrics. The fleece is 50% off solid colors and 40% printed fleece. I wanted to make a fleece blanket last weekend, and now that the fleece is on sale, I’m going to make one. The pictures on the ad made me want to make an m&m themed one!

Week 9

Describe an advertisement you have encountered that was personalized to you: What visual or text elements do you recall about the ad, and how did the personalization affect you?

By Katherine Woods

A recent ad that I saw was for Maybelline’s newest mascara, The Colossal Cat Eyes. I love mascara and making my lashes look long. In the ad you see tuns of full luscious lashes and along with plenty of cute baby tigers. I was so excited about the new product that within the week I walked over to Walgreens and purchased a tube of the magnificent stuff. I did lengthen my lashes but not as dramatically as in the advertisement. I was happy with my purchase and when I’m wearing it when the commercial comes on I feel just as beautiful as the models.

Week 9 Discussion

An ad that I had seen just recently was for Garnier Nutrisse hair color. They use Tina Fey in their ads with showing off colored medium brown mahogany colored hair using the Garnier Nutrisse products. In the ad, (like most hair product ads) her hair looked amazing, shiny, and healthy. They kept saying it was simple and easy to do on your own. One of the reasons I felt this ad was personalized to me is because I had previously been thinking about coloring my hair back closer to my normal brown color because I recently had highlights in it before. Honestly, after watching that ad, I took the weekend and bought a box of Garnier Nutrisse Medium Brown hair color and colored my own hair for the first time by myself. I really liked the results of my hair color and it just felt fresh for quite a few days after.
